Gubb Comprehensive Guide
Welcome! This guide provides detailed information on all features of the Gubb app to help you get the most out of your note-taking and productivity experience.
1. Getting Started
1.1 Installation
Installing Gubb is straightforward:
- macOS: Download the
.dmg
file from our website. Open the downloaded file, and in the window that appears, drag the Gubb icon into your Applications folder. You can then launch Gubb from your Applications folder or using Spotlight search. - Windows: Download the
.exe
installer from our website. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts provided by the installer. Once finished, you can launch Gubb from the Start Menu or a desktop shortcut if created.
1.2 User Interface Overview
The Gubb interface is designed for simplicity and focus:
- Title Bar: The top area of the window.
- Draggable Area: The leftmost part allows you to click and drag to move the window. Double-clicking maximizes/restores the window size.
- Search Bar: Located in the center for finding notes quickly.
- Action Buttons (Right): Buttons for creating a new note (
+
) and toggling the Notes History sidebar (↻
).
- Note Indicator: Small dots below the title bar show how many notes you have and which one is currently active.
- Editor Canvas: The main central area where you type and edit your notes.
- Hover Sidebar (Right): Appears when you move your mouse near the right edge of the window. Contains quick access icons for Timer, Clipboard History, Font Cycle, Theme Cycle, Settings, and Speech-to-Text.
- Notes History Sidebar (Optional): A panel that slides in from the right (when toggled) showing your list of notes.
- Status Area (Bottom Left): Displays the total note count and indicates any active keyword features (like ‘reminder’ or ‘conversion’).
1.3 Creating Your First Note
Simply launch Gubb and start typing in the main editor area. Your content is saved automatically as you type. There’s no manual save button needed for individual notes.
2. Working with Notes: Editing & Formatting
2.1 Basic Editing
Gubb uses a rich text editor that supports standard text editing actions like typing, deleting, copy, paste, undo (Cmd/Ctrl + Z
), and redo (Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z
).
2.2 Markdown Formatting
Use these Markdown-inspired shortcuts for quick formatting. Type the shortcut followed by a space, or use the keyboard combinations:
Format | Shortcut (Type) | Keyboard |
---|---|---|
Bold | **Text** or __Text__ | Cmd/Ctrl + B |
Italic | *Text* or _Text_ | Cmd/Ctrl + I |
Inline Code | `Text` | Cmd/Ctrl + E |
Bulleted List | - or * (at line start) | (Automatic) |
Numbered List | 1. (at line start) | (Automatic) |
Checkbox (Unchecked) | [] or [ ] (at line start) | (Automatic) |
Checkbox (Checked) | [x] (at line start) | (Click Box) |
Note: For lists and checkboxes, pressing Enter
will continue the list format on the next line. Press Enter
twice or Backspace
on an empty list item to exit the list format.
2.3 Working with Checklists
Once you create a checklist item using []
, you can toggle its state (checked/unchecked) by simply clicking on the checkbox itself within the editor.
2.4 Handling Links
When you paste a valid URL (e.g., https://www.gubb.net/
) into the editor, Gubb automatically converts it into a clickable link. The displayed text will be a shortened version (usually the domain name, like gubb.net
), but clicking it will open the full URL in your default web browser.
2.5 Paste Behavior
Gubb aims for clean notes. When pasting content from other applications:
- Most formatting (colors, fonts, sizes) from the source is removed.
- URLs are converted to links (see above).
- Leading whitespace/indentation on pasted lines is generally removed.
- Images cannot be pasted into notes.
3. Managing Your Notes
3.1 Creating New Notes
Click the large +
(SmallAddIcon) button in the top-right corner of the title bar. A new, blank note will be created and become the active note.
3.2 Navigating Between Notes
There are a few ways to switch between your notes:
- Notes History Sidebar: Click the
↻
(RepeatIcon) button to open the sidebar. Click on any note title/preview in the list to open it. - Search Bar: Use the search bar in the title bar. Clicking a search result navigates to that note.
- [Keyboard Shortcuts – If Applicable]: [e.g., Use Cmd/Ctrl + Arrow Keys or specific shortcuts if implemented].
- [Swipe Gestures – If Applicable]: [e.g., Swipe left/right on the editor canvas if implemented].
3.3 Using the Notes History Sidebar
The Notes History sidebar (toggled by the ↻
icon) provides an overview of your notes:
- View List: Shows a scrollable list of all your notes, usually with a title (first line of the note) and a short content preview.
- Select Note: Click any note to make it active in the main editor. The currently active note is highlighted.
- Create Note: Includes a button (usually
+ New Note
) to create a new note. - Delete Note: Hover over a note in the list to reveal a trash icon (
🗑️
). Click it to delete the note (you may be asked for confirmation). - Close Sidebar: Click the
↻
icon again or click outside the sidebar area.
3.4 Searching Notes
The search bar in the title bar performs a live search as you type. It matches your query against the titles and content previews of your notes.
- Results appear in a dropdown below the search bar.
- Click a result to jump to that note.
- Press
Enter
to navigate to the first highlighted result. - Press
Escape
to clear the search query and close the dropdown.
4. Productivity Tools
4.1 Integrated Timer
Boost your focus sessions with the built-in timer, accessed from the hover sidebar (⏱️
TimeIcon).
- Modes: Select “Countdown” for Pomodoro-style work intervals (set minutes/seconds) or “Count Up” to track elapsed time like a stopwatch.
- Controls: Use the buttons to Start, Pause, and Reset the timer.
- Minimize: Click the minimize button within the timer dialog to shrink it to a small, persistent overlay on your screen, allowing you to monitor time while working in Gubb or other apps.
- Maximize/Close Minimized Timer: Click the maximize button on the minimized timer to restore the full dialog, or the close button to stop and dismiss it entirely.
4.2 Speech to Text
Dictate your notes instead of typing. Activate this feature using the 🎤
(MdMic) icon in the hover sidebar.
- Click the icon to start recording (you might need to grant microphone permissions the first time). The icon may change color to indicate recording.
- Speak clearly.
- Click the icon again to stop recording.
- The transcribed text will be inserted into your note at the current cursor position, followed by a space.
5. Customization & Appearance
5.1 Quick Cycling (Hover Sidebar)

- [Data/Sync – If Applicable]: [e.g., Configure cloud sync, view local data path, backup options]
6. Advanced Features
6.1 Keyword-Activated Features
Typing specific keywords can unlock specialized functionality within a note. The keyword needs to be present somewhere in the note’s content. The activation status is usually shown in the bottom-left status area.
- Todo/Reminders (
gubb@todo
): [Describe exactly what happens. Does a date picker appear? Does the note get tagged? Does it integrate with system reminders? Example: “When ‘gubb@todo’ is detected, a dedicated panel may appear allowing you to set due dates and reminder times which integrate with your system calendar.”] - Conversions (
gubb@convert
): [Describe exactly what happens. Is there a specific input area? Does it evaluate text directly? Example: “With ‘gubb@convert’ active, you can type calculations or conversions like ‘150 lbs to kg’, ’25 USD * 12′, or ‘now + 3 weeks’, and Gubb may display the result directly below or in a dedicated output area.”]
Note: Removing the keyword from the note will deactivate the associated feature.
6.2 Clipboard History Integration
Gubb integrates with a system-level clipboard history (managed via the system tray icon, if enabled during setup or via settings).
- Access History: Click the
📋
(BsClipboard) icon in the hover sidebar, or use the system tray icon, to open the clipboard history panel. - Paste from History: In the clipboard history panel, click on a previous clip to paste it directly into the currently active Gubb note at the cursor position. The panel will typically close automatically after pasting.
6.3 Exporting and Copying Notes
[Explain how users can export or copy note content. Example: “You can export or copy the content of the currently active note using options found [Where? e.g., File Menu, Right-Click Context Menu, dedicated Export button?]. Available options include:”]
- Copy as Plain Text: Copies the note content to the clipboard without formatting.
- Copy as Markdown: Copies the note content with Markdown formatting preserved.
- Export to Text File (.txt): Saves the current note as a plain text file.
- Export to Markdown File (.md): Saves the current note as a Markdown file.
7. Data Management
7.1 Local Storage
By default, Gubb stores all your notes locally on your computer’s hard drive. This ensures your data is private and accessible even offline. The data is typically stored in a dedicated folder within your user profile:
- macOS Path: [e.g.,
~/Library/Application Support/Gubb/
] - Windows Path: [e.g.,
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Gubb\
]
Note: These paths might be hidden by default in your operating system. You may need to enable viewing hidden files/folders.
7.2 Backup Recommendations
Since your data is stored locally, it is crucial to include the Gubb data folder (mentioned above) in your regular computer backup routine. Use tools like Time Machine (macOS), File History (Windows), or other third-party backup software to protect your notes against data loss due to hardware failure or other issues.
7.3 Cloud Sync (If Applicable)
[If Gubb offers cloud sync using services like iCloud/CloudKit or AWS, describe it here.]
Example: “Gubb offers optional cloud synchronization using [Service Name, e.g., iCloud Drive]. If enabled in Settings > Data/Sync, your notes will be securely stored in your [Service Name] account and kept synchronized across multiple devices where you’re logged into both Gubb and the same [Service Name] account. This also serves as a cloud backup.”
8. Account & Billing (If Applicable)
[If Gubb is a paid app or has premium subscriptions, detail account management and billing here.]
Example: “To access premium features like [e.g., Cloud Sync, Advanced Export Options], a Gubb Pro subscription is required. You can manage your subscription status, view payment history, and update billing details through the Settings > Account/Subscription panel within the app or by logging into your account on our website at [Link to Website Account Page].”
Refer to our Pricing Page for details on subscription plans and our Refund Policy for information on cancellations and refunds.
9. Troubleshooting
9.1 App Not Responding or Crashing
- Try closing Gubb completely (Force Quit on macOS via
Cmd+Option+Esc
, or use Task Manager on Windows viaCtrl+Shift+Esc
) and relaunching it. - Ensure you have the latest version of Gubb installed. Check for updates via [Update mechanism, e.g., Settings > General > Check for Updates].
- Restart your computer.
- If the issue persists, check the logs located at [Path to Log Files, e.g., within the data directory] and contact support with the relevant information.
9.2 Sync Issues (If Applicable)
- Verify you are logged into the correct [Cloud Service, e.g., iCloud] account on all devices.
- Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
- Check if cloud sync is enabled in Gubb’s Settings > Data/Sync panel.
- Try toggling the sync setting off and on again.
9.3 Resetting Application Data (Use with Caution!)
If Gubb becomes unusable and other troubleshooting fails, you might consider resetting its data. WARNING: This will permanently delete all your notes and settings unless you have a backup or cloud sync enabled.
- Ensure Gubb is completely closed.
- Navigate to the Gubb data folder (see Section 7.1).
- Rename the folder (e.g., from `Gubb` to `Gubb_Backup`) or delete it (if you are certain you have backups elsewhere).
- Relaunch Gubb. It should start as if it were newly installed. You may need to log in again or reconfigure settings. If you renamed the folder, you might be able to manually restore notes from the `Gubb_Backup` folder later if needed.
